KEY POINTS
  • Hydro Ottawa and Ottawa Community Housing have announced an expanded partnership aimed at enhancing sustainability.
  • The initiative includes new solar panels, heat pumps, and an EV car-sharing program as part of their efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
  • How will these green projects shape Ottawa's environmental future?

Hydro Ottawa and Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) have announced an expansion of their existing partnership to further reduce carbon emissions in OCH communities through a series of energy-saving projects.

This collaboration aims to leverage Hydro Ottawa’s expertise in renewable energy and energy efficiency with OCH’s commitment to sustainable housing solutions. The expanded partnership underscores a strategic effort to address climate change and support the City of Ottawa’s ambitious environmental goals.

Solar Panels and Heat Pumps

The partnership will see the installation of new solar panels, with 37 solar arrays already in place, capable of generating 500,000 kWh of clean energy. These solar panels are expected to significantly decrease reliance on non-renewable energy sources, contributing to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions for OCH properties.

In addition to solar panels, 260 heat pumps are planned for individual townhomes to enhance heating and cooling efficiency. Heat pumps are known for their energy efficiency, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional heating and cooling systems. The installation of these pumps is a critical step in optimizing energy use and reducing overall carbon footprints in residential areas.

Building automation systems (BAS) have been implemented in 18 OCH buildings, with plans for 27 more. These systems are designed to optimize energy use, contributing to the overall reduction in carbon emissions. BAS technology allows for real-time monitoring and control of building systems, ensuring efficient energy use and reducing waste.

Electric Vehicle Car-Sharing Program

An electric vehicle (EV) car-sharing program is also part of the initiative. Supported by new EV charging infrastructure, the program has seen 255 users travel 34,444 kilometers since its launch, promoting sustainable transportation options for OCH residents.

The car-sharing program not only provides affordable and convenient transportation but also encourages the use of electric vehicles, which produce zero emissions and help in reducing the overall carbon footprint of the community.

This partnership aligns with the City of Ottawa’s Climate Change Master Plan, which aims to reduce emissions by 96% by 2040.

Since 2010, OCH has reinvested $64.1 million in cost savings into improving its operations, highlighting a longstanding commitment to sustainability. These reinvestments have been crucial in enhancing the quality of life for residents and ensuring that housing remains affordable while also being environmentally responsible.

Hydro Ottawa and OCH are also exploring additional carbon reduction projects, including future installations of heat pumps and ongoing support for OCH’s Long-Range Capital and Carbon Plan.

This expanded collaboration underscores a shared commitment to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility in the National Capital Region. By working together, Hydro Ottawa and OCH are setting a benchmark for how community partnerships can effectively address climate change and promote sustainable living practices.
