Solar company Sunrun, which installs residential solar panels and energy storage, has emerged as a top player in the sector and a major rival to Elon Musk’s SolarCity, which owns the San Francisco-based firm.
Three years ago, SolarCity had a third of the market for U.S. residential solar installations while Sunrun had just 5%; this year, analysts say SolarCity accounts for 9.3% and Sunrun’s market share has risen to 9%. The company says it has sold more than $3 billion in installed solar systems.
