ABB | News Release — ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order from the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), the public utility which generates, transmits and distributes electricity in the country, for a comprehensive network monitoring and control solution that will enable the monitoring and control of its power distribution network.

The new system will help the utility with management of electricity demand and improve power supplies by reducing the frequency and duration of outages experienced by customers.

Malawi, in southern Africa is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast and Mozambique on the east, south and west. With increased demand and consumption, it is working on improving the quality and reliability of supplies as well as enhancing access to electricity for rural communities, who make up a large part of its 15 million strong population.

As part of the project scope, ABB will provide a system solution comprising hardware, software, storage and communications equipment. The advanced distribution management solution comprises SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition), DMS (distribution management system) and OMS (outage management system) software.

This project further strengthens ABB’s leading position as a provider of advanced distribution management systems to electricity utilities in the Southern African region, with systems installed in South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. ABB has partnered ESCOM for several power infrastructure projects over the years.The company’s ability to provide both transmission and distribution management solutions enables ease of integration and a common user interface as well as training and support benefits.
