A red ribbon ceremony, attended by the Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and community leaders in Fisher River Cree Nation, launched a solar farm built entirely by Indigenous employees.

The farm has been up and running since March, but the pandemic delayed the ceremony.

The $2.4 million project was funded by Fisher River, with $1 million in support from the Western Economic Diversification Canada. W Dusk Energy Group Inc., an Indigenous-owned renewable energy firm, helped design and run the farm.

The community secured a deal to sell power to Manitoba Hydro for the next 30 years. The Royal Bank of Canada will also purchase green electricity sourced from the solar farm, said Cochrane.
