KEY POINTS
  • A Kansas-based roofing company completed the 40 square (4000 square foot) 15kW Tesla Solar Roof installation.
  • The time-lapse covers 4 days of installing the solar roof tiles and flashings.
  • The company expects to reduce install time as they learn from each job and nail down their process.

There has been a video going around of a 15kW Tesla solar roof system being installed by a third party roofing company in just 4 days. The video was uploaded by Weddle and Sons Roofing a roofing company based in Topeka, Kansas.

The company says the condensed version of the time-lapse covers 4 days of installing the solar roof tiles, and flashings. That a tear-off of the existing roof and dry-in with double-layer Firestone underlayment took place in a single additional day, before the time-lapse starts.

Elon Musk announced the release of Tesla Solar Roof Version 3 in 2019, and Tesla soon started scaling-up production at Gigafactory New York once Version 3 was ready.

Since then, there have been horrible installation stories like the one in Florida that resulted in leaks and the project being redone. This made Tesla change the underlayment, as the old version was discovered to be the cause of the problem.

In that case, Tesla was in charge of the installation itself with subcontractors only being in charge of the roof removal.

Tesla has also had its own share of delays and slow installation issues, with some complaining it took 2 months, but it’s nice to see a successful project being carried out quickly.

It seems like third-party companies like Weddle and Sons, who have more experience with roof installations, may well help Tesla to streamline its solar roofing process and make it a more attractive proposition for homeowners.
