Bentley says every new car it sells, by 2026, will be either a plug-in hybrid or an electric vehicle.
That four years after that, the plug-in hybrids will be completely phased out as part of its goal to only have an electric vehicle lineup.
“A 100-year-old company that’s renowned for the best 12-cylinder, the most successful 12-cylinder in the world, will not be building engines in less than a decade,” said Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and CEO at Bentley Motors Ltd. “This is a profound change for the industry, but we want to lead that change. We’re not frightened by it, we’re inspired by it.”
Bentley also aims to be completely carbon neutral across its manufacturing within a decade.
The company, owned by Volkswagen, said its environmental targets would make it “financially resilient and recession-proof” as it looks to protect itself from the coronavirus downturn, which has damaged car sales.
The carmaker will also commit to consuming no plastic at its factory by 2030, as well as to raising the proportion of women and people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds in its management ranks to 30 percent, from 20 percent in 2020.
