Six years ago, JerryRigEverything installed his own solar panels and predicted they’d pay off in six years. Well—it’s been six years. So, did they?
Spoiler: yes.
Jerry’s 8 kW DIY solar array in Utah cost about $8,200 after tax credits and has now generated nearly 69,000 kWh—enough to completely cover his household’s daily use and offset 68 tons of CO₂. Even with Utah’s modest 13¢/kWh electricity rate, his system has officially paid for itself, saving $9,048 and counting.
But he’s not stopping there.
In this update, Jerry takes his setup to the next level with new stackable batteries and a Smart Home Panel 3, giving him plug-and-play energy storage and more control over where his solar power goes.
As he puts it: “It’s kind of like having a bunch of employees constantly working every day to make me money—and I’m investing that back into my electrical independence.”
