BEAVERTON, Ore. — Vernier Software & Technology wrote its new Investigating Solar Energy lab book to expose students in grades 4–6 to solar energy concepts while helping them develop solutions to real-world problems.

The lab book, which contains nine experiments and two culminating engineering projects, teaches students about solar energy, energy transfer, series and parallel circuits, and variables that affect solar panel output.

“Educators need to help students meet the Next Generation Science Standards performance expectations, and providing engaging, hands-on solar energy activities to meet these expectations can have a positive impact on students’ interest in both science and engineering,” said John Wheeler, CEO of Vernier Software & Technology. “Our new lab book offers experiments that both challenge students and engage them in solving problems using science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

During the experiments, students explore—and find solutions to—real-world situations such as designing and building a model home that uses solar energy, using the engineering design process to construct a solar oven, and more. These experiments utilize the LabQuest 2 or LabQuest Mini, KidWind Solar Energy Exploration Kit, Vernier Energy Sensor, Vernier Resistor Board, and Surface Temperature Sensor.
